It’s another Sunday, and as the 4th commandment teaches, it is our duty to remember and keep the Sabbath Day Holy. For many of us, participating in the celebration Mass can become a routine, a day of obligation. We recite prayers and responses from memory, often without taking time to reflect deeply on them. But do we truly understand the beauty and depth of the Holy Mass, the highest and most perfect form of prayer?
As revealed in Scripture, taught in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and witnessed by saints and mystics, Heaven and earth come together during the Mass. The Holy Mass is truly a meeting place between Heaven and earth, where the Church on earth joins the eternal worship of the angels and saints before God’s throne. There are certain moments and prayers during the Mass when this unity between Heaven and earth becomes especially clear:
- The Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy): This prayer concludes the Preface, right before the Eucharistic Prayer. The priest, saying, “And so, with Angels and Archangels… we sing the hymn of your praise” explicitly invites the congregation to join the angels and saints. As we sing “Holy, Holy, Holy,” our voices unite with the eternal praise that is continually being offered to God in Heaven (Revelation 4:8).
- The Eucharistic Prayer and Epiclesis: This is when the priest extends his hands over the bread and wine, calling down the Holy Spirit. Heaven reaches down to earth to change the physical elements into Christ’s Body and Blood (Transubstantiation). The priest asks that God’s holy angel carry our offering to His altar in heaven. This means that the earthly altar and the heavenly altar become dynamically linked as one single sanctuary.
- The Memorial Acclamation (The Mystery of Faith). Said immediately after the consecration of the bread and wine, time collapses as we proclaim the past, present, and future simultaneously. We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection, until you come again.” This means that the timeless, eternal reality of Heaven enters our specific, chronological moment on earth.
- . Holy Communion. Receiving Christ provides a literal foretaste of the eternal wedding feast of Heaven, making this the most intimate intersection of the divine and the human.
The short film below, The Veil Removed, purposes to increase participation and understanding of the Eucharist by igniting amazement through the miraculous beauty of the Catholic Mass.
With this understanding, let us approach every Mass with greater awareness, actively and intentionally celebrating this beautiful sacrifice. May the Holy Spirit open our hearts to the beauty of the Mass and guide us to worship God worthily in this sacred sacrifice.
