The Divine Mercy Chaplet invites us to meditate on Jesus’ infinite mercy, nurturing a profound communion with His compassionate heart. It focuses on asking for mercy for the whole world. You can pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy anytime, but 3:00 PM is the Hour of Mercy, when Jesus died on the cross. It is often prayed during the Divine Mercy Novena leading up to Divine Mercy Sunday (the Sunday after Easter).
How to Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy
You use a regular rosary (5 decades). Follow these steps;
1. Introductory Prayers (on the Crucifix and 1st three beads)
- Sign of the Cross
- Optional Opening Prayer:
“You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.”
- 3x: “O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!”
2. On the Our Father bead (large bead):
“Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.”
3. On the Hail Mary beads (10 small beads of each decade):
“For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”(Repeat 10x)
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all five decades.
5. Concluding Prayer (after five decades):
“Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”
(Repeat 3x)
Optional Closing Prayer:
“Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.”
- Finish with the sign of the cross
